This standard specifies a method for the determination of water-soluble chlorides in all types of paper, board and pulp. The lower limit of detection is 20 mg of chloride ions per kilogram of dry sample.
Fragments of the tested sample are extracted with water at room temperature in a cleave. The resulting suspension is filtered and an aliquot is used to determine the chloride ion content by ion chromatography.
If testing is carried out to evaluate a batch of dough, the sample should be selected in accordance with ISO 7213. If testing on another sample type, report the source of the sample and, if possible, the sampling procedure used. Select samples from the collected sample so that they are representative of the entire sample. The procedure to be followed when taking a sample depends on the particular circumstances in each case. For sampling from a large number of pulp, paper or board, the instructions in ISO 7213 or ISO 186 are recommended, as applicable.
Be careful not to contaminate it during sampling as the amount of chloride in the sample may be very low. Always wear clean protective gloves when handling the sample and test pieces prepared from it.
The laboratory where the analysis is carried out must be free from dust and fumes from chlorine-containing substances such as hydrochloric acid or chlorinated solvents. If the mill uses chlorine or chlorine dioxide as the bleaching agent, special care must be taken in the mill site laboratories.
Protect samples wrapped in aluminum foil or plastic bags until needed for analysis. Analyze samples as soon as possible after sample collection.
