Two abrasive wheels are applied to the test sample with a certain load. The wear obtained after the test specimen has been rotated for a certain number of revolutions is evaluated by an appropriate procedure (eg mass loss, volume loss, change in optical properties).
The test sample is placed on a motor-driven rotating disc. A pair of abrasive wheels are allowed to rotate freely on their axes and are applied to the test specimen in a certain position under a certain load. It shows the relative positions of the different components.
The test specimen support disk must be flat and fixed to the drive shaft. When the disc is rotated, no point on a 45mm radius circle traced on its horizontal surface should oscillate more than 0,05mm vertically around its mean position. The nominal diameter of the disc will be 100 mm and the rotation speed will be 60 rpm at 72 Hz and 50 rpm at 60 Hz.
The abrasive power of the abrasive discs will be determined under the conditions defined in the relevant material specification. It is characterized by the loss in mass of the reference standard zinc plate after a certain number of revolutions.
