A test piece of known surface area is placed in a closed chamber where temperature, humidity, airflow and pressure are controlled according to defined values. Formaldehyde released from test piece mixtures
with the air in the room. This air is constantly drawn from the chamber and passes through scrubbing bottles containing water, which absorb the released formaldehyde.

At the end of the test, the formaldehyde concentration is determined photometrically. Formaldehyde release is calculated from this concentration, sampling time and exposed area of ​​the test piece and is expressed in milligrams per square meter and hour (mg/m2h).

The formaldehyde content of the aqueous solution will be determined photometrically from each 1-hour sampling period. The determination is based on the Hantzsch reaction where aqueous formaldehyde reacts with ammonium ions and acetylacetone to form diacetyldihydrolutidine (DDL), DDL has a maximum absorption at 412 nm. The reaction is highly specific to formaldehyde.
