ISO TS 16179 Shoe - Potentially Critical Substances in Shoe and Shoe Components - Determination of Organotin Compounds in Shoe Materials

This Technical Specification specifies a test method for determining the presence of organotin components.

ISO TS 16179 Shoe - Potentially Critical Substances in Shoe and Shoe Components - Determination of Organotin Compounds in Shoe Materials

This test method is applicable to all types of shoe materials. Tin-organic substances are extracted from the shoe material with a methanol-ethanol mixture of medium acid strength with tropolone as a complexing agent.

The organotin compound, a polar, high-boiling compound, is then reacted with sodium tetraethylborate to convert it to the corresponding volatile tetraalkyl derivative.

Finally, a gas chromatographic detection is performed with a mass selective detector (GC-MS). The test method is intended for use by shoe manufacturers, shoe retailers, supervisory authorities and independent testing laboratories.

The test piece consists of a single material from the shoe such as leather, textile, polymer, coated material or other. Sample preparation should include removing individual materials from the shoe and preparing a test piece that results in particles with a maximum diameter of 4 mm or less.
