The general characteristics of phenolic yellowing are that it is very bright yellow in color and can be easily removed from the fabric surface with a gentle wash. It also disappears quickly when exposed to sunlight. In an alkaline environment, jaundice begins to darken, and in an acidic environment, jaundice decreases.
Years ago, yellowing problems during storage were more common in fabric and apparel products. Especially in white and pastel colors, this problem was more common. In the studies carried out to solve this problem, it has been understood that this situation is caused by the polyethylene film or bags that the fabric is wrapped in.
Phenolic antioxidants form the basis of studies on this subject. The most well known is Buthylatedhydroxy Toluene (BHT). This chemical is found in polyethylene films and bags, cardboard and similar shipping products. This chemical reacts with nitrogen oxides in the air and turns the fabrics yellow.
In textile products, chemical substances containing phenolic antioxidants should not be used to prevent yellowing. However, it is not easy to avoid because they have a wide range of uses. At least nitrogen dioxide must be kept away from storage areas, well ventilated and temperature controlled.
