AS-NZS 1748.1 Solid Wood - Stress-Rated for Structural Purposes - Part 1: General Requirements

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance service within the scope of AS/NZS 1748.1 standard. The AS/NZS 1748.1 standard, an Australian-New Zealand standard, provides the stress rating of structural timber using any rating method.

AS-NZS 1748.1 Solid Wood - Stress-Rated for Structural Purposes - Part 1: General Requirements

It relies on the following principles to demonstrate the performance of the stress-rated structural product:

  • Stress-rated wood has the performance requirements given in the relevant product standard as requirements for use, and the structural properties listed in the stress rating offered in AS 1720.1 or elsewhere. (It is possible to use this package of standards to produce a product with a general stress rating for which the specifications are listed in AS 1720.1, or a product with a manufacturer's rating with the specifications specified by a manufacturer.)
  • The graded timber population must have useful and structural properties that meet the stated requirements.
  • Compliance is demonstrated through the verification process outlined in AS/NZS 4490.
  • This requires checking samples for compliance with service requirements and structural features.
  • The link between the verification and suitability of all structural features is established in the adequacy of the rating method.

This document provides background and guidance to support the use of the following Australia-New Zealand Standards package:

  • AS/NZS 1748.1 Wood - Solid - Stress-rated for structural purposes - Part 1: General requirements
  • AS/NZS 1748.2 Wood - Solid - Stress-rated for structural purposes - Part 2: Adequacy of the grading method
  • AS/NZS 4490 Timber – Solid – Stress-rated for structural purposes – Verification of properties

Background information forms the basis of the Standards and can be quite technical in some places. It is not necessary to understand all the background to be able to use the standards effectively.

The ultimate performance requirement of wood is that it should meet all necessary structural and usage characteristics. Verification according to AS/NZS 4490 provides assurance that it meets the usage requirements and two structural features. Steps taken in the grading method provide confidence that untested structural features are also suitable, once the suitability of two structural features has been proven.

To use the Standards package, an introductory understanding of some statistical concepts is required. While this is strictly background information, it is recommended that all people planning to use the Standards check if they are familiar with the concepts outlined in this section.
