EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 4662 standard. ISO 4662 specifies two methods for determining the rebound resistance of rubber with a hardness between 30 IRHD and 85 IRHD. These are the pendulum method and the trypsometer method.
With the pendulum method, a mass with a spherical tip strikes a flat test piece, holding it tightly but not protruding. The kinetic energy of the impacting mass is measured just before and after the impact.
With the trypsometer method, a flat test piece is struck by a hemisphere mounted around a disk supported on an axis, causing it to rotate by an off-axis mass. The kinetic energy of the impacting mass is measured just before and after the impact.
This variation of flexibility with conditions is an inherent property of polymers and can therefore only be fully evaluated if tests are performed over a wide variety of conditions. The factors described may have a different quantitative effect on durability.
While temperature can critically affect flexibility near the transition zones of the material under test, factors associated with time and indentation amplitude have only moderate effects, for which fairly wide tolerances are acceptable.
Ideally, the recoil resilience should be measured on a test piece with the back surface adhered to a rigid support to avoid friction losses due to slippage during impact. Unbonded test pieces are used as it is impractical to use bonded test pieces in many applications. Frictional losses are avoided by securely clamping the test piece.
