ISO 48-5 Rubber - Vulcanized or Thermoplastic - Determination of Hardness - Part 5: Standard Test for Indentation Hardness by the IRHD Pocket Gauge Method

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 48-5 testing. This standard specifies a method for determining the notch hardness of vulcanized or thermoplastic rubber by means of a pocket hardness meter calibrated in the IRHD. The use of such measuring devices is primarily for control purposes, not for specification purposes. It is possible to increase the accuracy by fixing the pocket hardness tester on a support.

ISO 48-5 Rubber - Vulcanized or Thermoplastic - Determination of Hardness - Part 5: Standard Test for Indentation Hardness by the IRHD Pocket Gauge Method

The hardness of rubber, measured with an IRHD pocket meter or a Shore durometer, is determined from the complex response of the rubber to an applied indentation. The IRHD pocket meter is a portable, hand-held durometer calibrated to measure on the IRHD scale.

Because of these factors, it is not recommended to directly correlate results using an IRHD pocket gauge with Shore durometer hardness values, although correlations have been established for some individual rubbers and compounds.

The measured property is the penetration depth of a given recess, which is forced into the material under certain conditions.

For sheets thinner than 6 mm, the test piece may consist of up to three layers, none thinner than 2 mm, to achieve the required thickness. However, the determinations made on such test pieces may not match those made on single-thickness pieces.

Place the test piece on a flat, hard, hard surface (e.g. glass). Hold the hardness tester in position so that the center of the recess is at least 12 mm from the edges of the test piece. Keeping the foot parallel to the surface of the test piece and making sure that the indentation is perpendicular to the rubber surface, apply the presser foot to the test piece as quickly as possible, without shock.
