MIL-I 24244 Stress Corrosion Cracking in Austenitic Stainless Steel

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of MIL-I 24244 test. Stress corrosion cracking is the failure of austenitic stainless steels caused by the combined action of a corrosive atmosphere and residual stress in the metal. The most common corrosive ion is the chloride ion.

The chloride ion can come from wash water, salt water, seawater, potable water, cleaning solutions, or a variety of other sources, including the insulation itself.

To qualify the insulation, the manufacturer or supplier must pass the insulation through one or more corrosion tests and perform a chemical analysis to determine the amount of inhibitor in the insulation.

Two other common specifications are MIL-I 24244 and NRC 1.36. MIL-I 24244 is the US Department of Defense specification for insulation for use in stainless steel tubing and nuclear propulsion system-related equipment. NCR 1.36 is a US energy specification section for insulation for use in nuclear power generation facilities.

In all features, the insulation sample is placed around a piece of austenitic stainless steel. The stainless steel has a taut U-bend that provides internal tension.

The insulation samples are saturated with distilled water to keep them wet and the stainless steel is heated to the boiling point of the water. This heating causes water to be drawn through the insulation and evaporate. Any chloride in the insulation will condense near the surface of the stainless steel. Stainless steel will rust if there is not enough inhibitor in the insulation.

After the insulation has passed the corrosion test and is approved, periodic chemical analysis is required. Verify that the amount of inhibitor has not changed. Orders are chemically analyzed before a particular order is shipped, which must be certified against a specification.
