The four main stages during the life of a storm cloud are:

• Water droplets coalesce into heavy droplets and freeze into ice particles. As they fall, they melt and it becomes rain. While updrafts are still present, falling rain also creates downdrafts. The presence of both upstream and downstream flows at this stage can cause significant internal turbulence;
• During the dispersal phase, updraft conditions no longer exist and the storm is largely characterized by weak downdrafts. As most of the moisture settles, there is not enough moisture in the lower air to continue the cycle and the storm dissipates.
