ISO 1421-1 specifies two methods for determining the tensile strength of rubber or plastic coated fabrics.

Method 1: strip test method, which is a method for determining tensile strength and elongation at break.
Method 2: grip test method, which is a method for determining tensile strength only.

The methods are applied to test pieces and wet test pieces that are in equilibrium with certain standard atmospheres for testing. Both methods require the use of a constant elongation rate (CRE) tensile testing machine.
