The SAE J400 standard specifies a laboratory procedure for testing and evaluating the resistance of a surface coating to chipping by the impact of gravel. The test is designed to reproduce the effect of gravel or other media hitting exposed paint or coated surfaces, or an automobile, and has been correlated to actual field results.
The specific purpose of the test is to evaluate organic surface coatings or systems on flat test panels; however, it may be possible to extend such tests to finished parts or to other types of materials such as anodized aluminum or coated plastics, and results are to be interpreted according to the limitations and purpose implied by the original test procedures and rating systems.
