The method includes procedures for shearing the test specimen, specimen support (waxed edges), and two procedures (constant strain rate or constant load velocity) for applying the compression force. Studies have shown that any combination of these procedures will yield the same test results with the stated precision.

Studies have shown that together with the bending stiffness of the combined carton and box dimensions, the edge direction compressive strength of vertical corrugated samples is related to the top-down compressive strength of vertical corrugated corrugated shipping containers.

This method can also be used to compare the compressive strength at the edges of different batches of similar combined sheets or to compare different material combinations.
