UL 1642 Test Standard for Lithium Batteries

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance service within the scope of UL 1642 standard. This standard covers primary (non-rechargeable) and secondary (rechargeable) lithium batteries for use as power sources in products. These batteries contain the metal lithuim or a lithuim alloy or a lithuim ion and may consist of a single electrochemical cell that converts chemical energy into electrical energy by an irreversible or reversible chemical reaction, or of two cells connected in series, parallel or both.

UL 1642 Test Standard for Lithium Batteries

These requirements cover lithuim batteries intended for use in technician replaceable or user replaceable applications.

The purpose of these requirements is to reduce the risk of fire or explosion when lithium batteries are used in a product. The final acceptability of these batteries is dependent on their use in a complete product that complies with the requirements applicable to the product in question.

They are also intended to reduce the risk of injury to persons from fire or explosion when user-replaceable lithium batteries are discarded from a product.

These requirements cover technician-replaceable lithium batteries containing 5,0 g (0,18 ounces) or less of metallic lithium. A battery containing more than 5.0 g of lithuim is evaluated on the basis of further examination and testing to determine compliance with the requirements of this standard, where applicable, and whether the battery is acceptable for its intended uses.

These requirements cover user-replaceable lithium batteries containing 4.0 g (0,13 ounces) or less of metal lithuim and not more than 1.0 g (0,4 ounces) of metal lithuim in each electrohemic cell. A battery containing more than 4.0 g or a cell containing more than 1.0 g of lithuim may require further examination and testing to determine if the cells or batteries are acceptable for their intended use.

These requirements do not cover the risk of toxicity from swallowing a lithium battery or its contents, or the risk of injury to persons if a battery is cut to gain access to a metal battery.

A product containing new or different features, characteristics, components, materials or systems from those covered by the requirements of this standard and presenting a risk of fire, electric shock or injury to persons should be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and to maintain an acceptable level of safety as originally anticipated for the purpose of this standard. final product requirements determined to be necessary. A product with features, features, components, materials or systems that conflict with certain requirements or provisions of this standard cannot be considered in accordance with this standard. Where appropriate, a revision of the requirements will be proposed and accepted in accordance with the methods used to develop, revise and implement this standard.
