UL 746C Test

UL 746C Safety standard for polymeric materials - regulation for use in electrical equipment evaluations sets standards for materials made of polymers for use in electrical equipment.

UL 746C Test

To prove protection against mechanical stress, impact stress must be applied to the equipment under test. Equipment for outdoor use is cooled for three hours in a cold room at -35 ± 2°C and then mounted on a rigid frame suitable for the intended use. In the cold state, a single impact is applied to the surface under test with a steel ball 50,8 mm (2 inches) in diameter and 0,535 kg (1,18 pounds).

To provide evidence, the equipment under test must be free of any damage that may prevent its correct use. Also, the intended degree of protection should not be changed negatively. Materials considered suitable for outdoor use have been exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light and/or immersed in water. UV exposure is accomplished using a twin-enclosed carbon weather meter for 720 hours or a xenon arc weather meter for 1000 hours. Water immersion test is performed at 70°C for 7 days.

Samples are tested for flammability, mechanical impact and mechanical strength before and after exposure. Materials that have not significantly deteriorated in any of these areas are considered past and suitable for outdoor use.

The UL 746 Series consists of 6 interconnected Standards.

  • UL 746A: Standard for Polymeric Materials – Short Term Property Evaluations
  • UL 746B: Standard for Polymeric Materials – Long-Term Property Evaluations
  • UL 746C: Standard for Polymeric Materials – Use in Electrical Equipment Evaluations
  • UL 746D: Standard for Polymeric Materials – Manufactured Parts
  • UL 746E: Standard for Polymeric Materials – Materials Used in Industrial Laminates, Filament Wound Tube, Vulcanized Fiber and Printed Wiring Boards
  • UL 746F: Standard for Polymeric Materials – Flexible Dielectric Film Materials for Use in Printed Wiring Boards
Evaluation DESCRIPTION
f1 The material met both UV and water immersion requirements.
f2 The material has met UV or water immersion requirements or has only been partially tested.
