EN 658-3 Advanced Technical Ceramics - Test for Determination of Flexural Strength

This standard specifies the conditions for determining the flexural strength of continuous fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composite materials under three-point or four-point bending at ambient temperature.

This standard applies to all ceramic matrix composites with continuous fiber reinforcement, unidirectional (1D), bidirectional (2D), and tridirectional xD (2 < x <= 3) loaded along a major reinforcement axis.

The test apparatus consists of two parts connected to the fixed and moving parts of the machine. It has two outer support rollers and one (three-point twist) or two (four-point twist) inner support rollers.

The cylindrical rollers will have a diameter of 4 mm to 10 mm. Their length should be at least equal to the width of the test specimen. It should be made of a material whose hardness is at least equal to that of the test specimen. The axes of the rollers will be parallel within 0,01 mm/mm.

The outer rollers (three- and four-point twist) and the inner rollers (four-point twist) must be able to rotate freely.

For three-point or four-point bending, respectively, two or three rollers must be able to rotate freely about an axis parallel to the longitudinal direction of the test specimen to accommodate the non-parallelism of the upper and lower faces.
