UNI 9175 Determination of Fire Response of Upholstered Products by Applying Small Flame

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of UNI 9175 standard. The UNI 9175 standard is evaluated in the presence or absence of combustion, flame or radiation of upholstered furniture. This is an indicator of the fire response of furniture exposed to a small source of ignition.

The method also provides an indication of the fire response of a product part under the influence of an ignition source to a limited extent during the initial stage of a fire.

Test assembly is done using the fabric to be tested. The burner is placed along the joint of the seat and the back of the test seat. Flame is applied on it 20 times for a certain time, first for 80 seconds, then for 140 seconds, and finally for 3 seconds. Burning, flaming and glowing are seen.

The tested material is classified into classes 1 to 3: a positive result after -20 seconds results in class 3; -A positive result after 80 seconds results in class 2; -A positive result after 140 seconds results in class 1.

The ignition source is applied to the intervening seatback area, 50 mm from the ends of any marks caused by a previous test, and the behavior of the assembly is observed. The sample passes the test if ignition stops within 120 seconds of removing the burner tube to which the flame is applied.

Conversely, if inflammation persists 120 seconds after burner removal, the sample will fail the test. However, if there is internal gradual combustion (scorching) throughout the entire thickness, then the test also cannot pass, it is necessary to check that the test frame is disassembled after the test is completed.

The three tests are performed in gradual order of flame exposure time, first 20 seconds, then 80 seconds, and finally 140 seconds, so that if it fails the test, the next application is not made.

At the first stage, the manufacturer must: submit some documents (request form, technical data sheet, all kinds of technical drawings and statements), submit test samples and control samples (they must be kept by the Laboratory for 5 years) and make the payment. The laboratory performs the tests and issues the test certificate, which includes the test reports and all the Manufacturer's stamped documents. In the second stage, the manufacturer sends the documents issued by the laboratory together with the request.

Where it is not possible to affix the conformity mark, the Manufacturer must issue a declaration of conformity in which it confirms the conformity of the product to the homologated prototype. This declaration must also state the homologation code.
