The permeability test is performed on a cylindrical test specimen that is laterally sealed by a rigid container or a flexible membrane. The sample is subjected to differential hydraulic load and the water flow is measured under a constant or falling load. The results are used to determine the permeability coefficient of the soil sample. Tests can be performed on intact, remolded, compacted or reconstituted samples.
