The maximum load (applied under specified conditions at room temperature) is the load that a refractory can withstand before failure divided by the area to which it is applied.
At ambient temperature, a test piece of certain dimensions is subjected to an increasing load in a compression testing machine until the test piece collapses or its height drops to its original value.
During the test, the load is increased by a certain percentage. The cold crush strength is calculated from the maximum force recorded and the dimensions of the test piece.
