VDMA 24364 Standard Test for Paint Wetting Agents

Defines a classification based on the intended use of the product in LABS critical areas and recommends voluntary labeling for LABS compliant products. It is intended for suppliers to assist paint processing companies in testing and classifying their products for LABS compliance.

LABS (substances that prevent paint wetting) can contaminate the workpieces to be painted. They can cause wetting problems in the dyeing process and thus dyeing errors.

Especially clean components are very important in paint shops. Any contamination that may cause deterioration in varnishing must be completely removed. Appropriate cleaning requirements are normally defined as LABS-free (PWIS-free), silicone-free, or LABS-compliant (PWIS-compliant).

The sources of paint wetting inhibitors (PWIS or LABS) are very different. Only silicones are not critical substances. Components normally need to be cleaned to achieve the required PWIS/LABS-free state or PWIS/LABS compliance. Cleaning elastomeric components, especially seals, is a particularly challenging task. Cleaning processes tailored to the requirements provide potential savings in time and cost.
