This standard describes criteria for self-contained open-circuit underwater breathing equipment (nitrox scuba, scuba diving) using pressurized nitrox gas or oxygen with an oxygen content greater than 22 percent. Nitrox is a gas mixture of nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrox gas is used in diving with enriched air.

While the oxygen of this gas is high, its nitrogen is low at the same rate. Divers diving with nitrox are more fit than in normal air. As a result, the dwell times are extended.

Respirators used with nitrox and oxygen are generally used as direct oxygen tanks or as supplements. There are pressure gauges with precise measurement feature and gas mixtures can be controlled.

In general, diving cylinders are filled with oxygen or respirable air, and gas lines can be depressurized at any time for safety purposes. This equipment is equipped with a high pressure oxygen connection, a breathing air connection and a high pressure nitrox filling connection.
