EN ISO 15883-6 specifies specific requirements for washer-disinfectors (WDs) intended for use where the required disinfection assurance level can be achieved with cleaning and thermal disinfection (A0 at least 60) and does not require independent testing.
It is intended to be used in conjunction with EN ISO 15883-1, which gives general requirements for WDs. The range of products in which this particular type of WD can be used is limited to devices and equipment that are non-invasive and non-critical (ie, do not penetrate the skin or come into contact with mucosal surfaces).
This part of EN ISO 15883 is the sixth in a series specifying the performance of washer-disinfectors and specifies specific requirements for performance applicable to general-purpose washer-disinfectors. Its requirements apply to washer-disinfectors used for the cleaning and disinfection of non-invasive and non-critical reusable medical devices (i.e., that do not penetrate the skin or come into contact with mucosal surfaces) and other items used in healthcare settings without further treatment.
Areas of application under EN ISO 15883 include laboratory, veterinary and dental use, and other specialized applications such as washer-disinfectors for the disinfection of crockery and cutlery intended for use in immunologically suppressed patients.
If the dirt removal process is not completed before the disinfection process begins, the effectiveness of the disinfection may be impaired. It is desirable that washer-disinfector manufacturers be very clear about the materials that can be processed in the washer-disinfector and refer to the reprocessing instructions provided by the manufacturer of the items to be treated.
