EN ISO 7176-3 specifies test methods for measuring the effectiveness of the brakes of manual wheelchairs and electrically powered wheelchairs, including scooters, intended to carry one person, with a maximum speed not exceeding 15 km/h. The performance of a wheelchair's brakes can be critical to safety. The tests specified in this part of EN ISO 7176 determine the wheelchair's ability to stop safely on level ground and on a slope, and to remain stable when parked on a slope.
A series of wheelchair braking actions are performed and the resulting responses of the wheelchair are measured and observed.
All test planes specified in this clause shall be rigid with the surface friction coefficient specified in EN ISO 7176-13 and with sufficient dimensions to perform the tests. The surface must be flat, with any two points on the plane 1 m apart, located between two imaginary horizontal planes 5 mm apart, as an indication of flatness. Compliance with this requirement can be assessed using a 1 m straight edge.
This test applies to parking brakes for all wheelchair types, if any. If a wheelchair has more than one parking brake system, both systems should be considered separately, where each system can be operated independently.
