IEC 60601-2-1 applies to the basic safety and basic performance of electron accelerators in the range of 1 MeV to 50 MeV used for the treatment of patients, hereinafter referred to as ME equipment.

Including type testing and ground testing, this particular standard applies to the manufacture and certain aspects of installation and equipment involved in electron accelerators used to increase the precision, accuracy and volumetric targeting of treatment delivery intended for radiotherapy in medical practice.

This standard contains the following important technical changes:

• Compliance with new relevant complementary standards;
• Addition of computer interface and control;
• Addition of new technologies to radiotherapy, including beam coating and adaptive radiotherapy.
