EN ISO 7176-7 Wheelchairs - Part 7: Standard Test for Measuring Seat and Wheel Dimensions

The purpose of this part of EN ISO 7176 is to ensure comparability of information on seat and wheel dimensions by specifying a consistent, repeatable measurement method that provides information relevant to prescribers' needs.

Wheelchair seats and wheels tend to contain deformable, contoured and flexible structures with few consistent reference points from which reliable measurements can be made. In the past, manufacturers have developed their own different measurement methods. This prevents one manufacturer's measurements from being compared to another.

In addition, measurements are sometimes chosen for ease of measurement rather than clinical utility. For example, for suspension seats, the seat depth is usually determined along the suspension material, and the gap between the seat back and the backrest is not taken into account. This gap can be as large as 5 cm and significantly affects the seating depth of the wheelchair.

This part of EN ISO 7176 first involves placing a standardized loader size on the wheelchair seat. Two sizes of loader dimensions are indicated, corresponding to adult and child body sizes. The gauge reproducibly deforms any flexible structure and provides reference points from which dimensions can be measured.

The locations where the measurements were made are described according to the loader indicator. Correct positioning of the indicator is essential for repeatability of results and is detailed in the text. Finally, a format for presenting results has been added to facilitate comparison of data from different manufacturers.

It should be noted that wheelchairs are usually produced in model ranges consisting of a basic model and a number of variations from this basic model. It is the responsibility of the measurers to choose which model variations to measure.
