TS EN 60601-2-3 Electrical Medical Equipment - Part 2-3: Specific Features for Basic Safety and Required Performance of Short Wave Therapy Equipment

The IEC 60601-2-3 standard, prepared by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), an affiliate of the International Standards Organization (ISO), describes the criteria and test methods for shortwave therapy devices for safety and performance.

TS EN 60601-2-3 Electrical Medical Equipment - Part 2-3: Specific Features for Basic Safety and Required Performance of Short Wave Therapy Equipment

This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute with the following title: TS EN 60601-2-3 Electrical medical equipment - Part 2-3: Specific features for the basic safety and required performance of shortwave therapy equipment.

Shortwave therapy equipment is medical devices used for the treatment of patients by exposure to electric or magnetic fields generated in the frequency range of 13 MHz and above but not exceeding 45 MHz.

Shortwave therapy devices with a nominal output power not exceeding 10 W are exempted from the specific requirements of this standard.

Shortwave therapy equipment is one of the physical therapy tools. This equipment warms deep body tissues and is effective in various muscle, joint and other soft tissue problems. Such devices are used for effects such as increasing blood flow in tissues, increasing flexibility and reducing pain. There are three main types of diathermy devices: short wave, microwave and ultrasound. Among these, ultrasound has more common usage. In general, ultrasound is used in the physical treatment of problems affecting a small area. Shortwave diathermy is used for problems affecting larger parts of the body.

Short wave therapy devices generate heat with high frequency electromagnetic energy. More heating is obtained with the continuous energy flow. In the pulse mode, there are also mechanical effects apart from the heating effect.

IEC 60601-2-3 within the scope of medical device tests by our organization Tests in accordance with the standard are also performed.
