This standard covers all active ultrasound devices designed for medical diagnostic use, including ultrasonic echo meters (both manually and automatically scanned), direct transmission devices, doppler echo. This standard specifies measurement standards for acoustic output quantities of ultrasonic diagnostic equipment.
Measurements of acoustic output quantities will be made in water. However, to provide values more typical of what can occur in tissue, reduced values of output quantities in addition to in-water values will be required. To provide an example, this standard discusses detailed depreciation procedures and requirements for a particular model.
It is anticipated that in the future, different derating factors will be required to better represent different applications.
