EN ISO 7176-6 Wheelchairs - Part 6: Determining the Maximum Speed of Electric Powered Wheelchairs

Maximum speed can be an important factor in choosing the most suitable wheelchair for individuals. Maximum speed can have an impact on whether an electrically powered mobility device can be used on trails, trails, or both, depending on local regulations. Some people's main concern may be to travel as fast as possible, while other people may be concerned about higher speeds. In addition, other tests in the EN ISO 7176 series may require the determination of the maximum speed to perform their procedures.

Mass added to the wheelchair for control or instrumentation purposes should not significantly affect the overall mass distribution of the wheelchair. The total mass of the loaded wheelchair shall be adjusted to compensate for such additional mass.

If the wheelchair has pneumatic tires, the air pressure in the tires should be adjusted according to the manufacturer's instructions. If a pressure range is specified, the highest recommended pressure should be selected.

During the tests, an appropriately sized test dummy shall be loaded onto the wheelchair, constructed and positioned in accordance with EN IS0 7176-11. The dummy should be secured to prevent it from moving out of position during tests.

The body support system, if adjustable, should be adjusted to correspond to the natural sitting posture with the lowest part of the leg support/footrest 50 mm above the test plane and the seat corresponding to normal sitting height. Horizontally adjusted body support systems will be in the middle position.

Rotating body support systems will be adjusted in the forward position. The inclination of the seat relative to the horizontal should be as close to 4O as possible, with a downward slope towards the rear. The inclination of the backrest relative to the vertical should be as close to the recline as possible. The angle between the seat and the leg support should be as close to 90° as possible.
