ISO TS 14569-2 Dental Materials - Abrasion Test

It is well understood that the wear mechanisms in the mouth are very complex. They can also differ from one person to another. Therefore, it seems impossible to reproduce these changing conditions with a single wear test.

As a result, many wear tests have been proposed in dental science. Most consider mainly one particular aspect of the different mechanisms, and some even claim to be able to fully characterize the wear resistance of dental materials. However, these procedures are not really comparable due to the different wear mechanisms considered and there is no generally accepted method.

Therefore, it makes sense to utilize laboratory tests that separately investigate the various aspects of wear that occur under clinical conditions. They can only determine wear for clinical situations dominated by the same wear mechanism, but it may be possible to predict full clinical wear with a number of different test methods.

In this second part of ISO/TS 14569, wear from occlusal contact of antagonistic teeth is discussed. The purpose of this section is to collect and describe the various laboratory tests available and at least describe the test conditions so that they can be used to screen different materials.

Because most test methods have very little wear, a profilometer, laser scanner, or similar method is used to measure wear. Computer software is required for all these tests. This software is not yet specified or standardized. It is not yet defined at what precision the surface should be scanned, or whether the whole or only part of the wear pattern should be measured. From a practical point of view, the models also need to be exactly matched before and after testing, and for this purpose reference points must be made in some cases, especially when measuring the antagonist.
