The operating and design categories defined in DIN EN 45545-1 are used to determine the hazard levels used as the basis for a classification system.
For each hazard level, this section specifies test methods, test conditions, and reaction-to-fire performance requirements. It is not within the scope of this European standard to describe measures that ensure the protection of vehicles in the event of a fire.
The design of rolling stock and the products used shall have the purpose of limiting fire development so that an acceptable level of safety can be achieved when an ignition event occurs.
In using the operating and design categories defined in DIN EN 45545-1, the requirements set out in this chapter take into account the existing operating conditions for European public rail transport.
