EN ISO 6621-5 Internal Combustion Engines - Piston Rings - Part 5: Quality Requirements

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 6621-5 testing. This standard specifies quality characteristics that can be defined but are not normally found in a drawing specification.

EN ISO 6621-5 Internal Combustion Engines - Piston Rings - Part 5: Quality Requirements

It covers:

  • One-piece piston rings in gray cast iron or steel;
  • Multi-part piston rings (oil control rings) composed of cast iron parts and spring components;
  • Steel one-piece and multi-part oil control rings, i.e. oil control rings in the form of strip steel components or steel segments (rails) with spring extension components.

In addition to specifying some limits of acceptance for inspection measurement principles (covered by EN ISO 6621‑2), this document also covers features for which there are no accepted quantitative measurement procedures and which are only visually checked with normal vision (spectacles, if applicable). Such features (superficial imperfections) are in addition to the standard tolerances for ring width, radial wall thickness, and closed clearance.

This standard does not specify acceptable quality levels (AQL), it is left to the manufacturer and the customer to decide on appropriate levels together. In this case, the recommendations of EN ISO 2859‑1 are followed.

This standard specifies the quality requirements for piston rings for reciprocating internal combustion engines for road vehicles and other applications. Applicable to all rings with nominal diameter from 30mm to 200mm (inclusive).

The common specifications and size tables presented in this standard account for a wide range of variables, and the designer should consider the conditions under which it will need to operate when selecting a particular ring type. The difficulty of trying to describe in absolute terms the quality achieved in the normal commercial manufacture of piston rings is well known. This standard quantifies commonly encountered aspects of quality in terms of casting defects and other deviations from ideal. Many minor flaws are clearly quite acceptable; Other defects caused by size or number are unacceptable.
