IEC EN 60534-8-4 Industrial Process Control Valves - Estimation of Noise Generated by Hydrodynamic Flow

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60534-8-4 testing. IEC EN 60534-8-4 establishes a method for estimating the noise produced by fluid flow in a control valve and the resulting noise level measured downstream of the valve and outside the pipe.

IEC EN 60534-8-4 Industrial Process Control Valves - Estimation of Noise Generated by Hydrodynamic Flow

Noise can be caused by both normal turbulence and fluid cavitation in the valve. Some parts of the method are based on the fundamental principles of acoustics, fluid mechanics and mechanics. The method is validated with test data.

It is valuable to predict the noise levels that will be produced by the valves. Safety requirements, such as occupational health standards, require that human exposure to noise be limited. There is also data showing that noise levels above certain levels can cause pipe failure or affect related equipment.

Earlier hydrodynamic noise standards were based on manufacturer's test data and were neither generic nor as complete as desired. The method can be used with all conventional control valve styles, including ball, butterfly, cage-type, eccentric rotary, and modified ball valves.

A valve restricts flow by converting pressure energy into turbulence, heat, and mechanical pressure waves in the fluid contained within the valve body and piping. A small part of this mechanical vibration is converted into acoustic energy. Most of the noise is trapped in the piping system with only a small fraction passing through the pipe wall downstream of the valve. The calculation of the mechanical energy involved is simple. The difficulties arise from first determining the acoustic efficiency of the conversion of mechanical energy to noise and then determining the noise attenuation caused by the pipe wall.

This part of IEC EN 60534 only considers noise from normal turbulence and fluid cavitation. It does not take into account any noise that may be produced by mechanical vibrations, flashing conditions, unstable flow patterns or unpredictable behavior.

In the typical installation, very little noise passes through the wall of the control valve body. The predicted noise is the noise to be measured at the standard measuring point 1 m downstream of the valve and 1 m from the outer surface of the pipe in a non-acoustic area. Ideal straight piping is assumed. As a non-acoustic field is rarely encountered in industrial installations, this estimate cannot guarantee real results in the field.
