IEC 61373 Railway Applications, Rolling Stock, Shock and Vibration Tests

IEC 61373 specifies requirements for testing equipment items intended for use in rolling stock which are subsequently subjected to vibration and shock due to the nature of the railway operating environment. The main technical changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:

• Method change for calculating the acceleration rate;
• Adding the concept of partially certified according to this standard;
• Addition of guidance for calculating functional RMS value from service data or RMS value from ASD levels.

This standard specifies requirements for random vibration and shock test items of pneumatic, electrical and electronic components (hereinafter referred to as equipment) to be fitted to rolling stock. Random vibration is the only method to be used for equipment approval.

The tests included in this standard are specifically aimed at demonstrating the ability of the tested equipment to withstand environmental vibration conditions normally expected for rolling stock. To obtain the best possible representation, the values ​​specified in this standard are derived from actual service metrics offered by various organizations around the world.

Although this standard primarily concerns railway vehicles on fixed rail systems, it also has wider use. For other transportation systems, such as pneumatic tires or trolleybuses, where the shock and vibration level is clearly different from those achieved in fixed rail systems, the supplier and customer can agree on test levels at the tender stage. Equipment tested at levels lower than those specified in this standard cannot be fully certified against the requirements of this standard.
