EN 45545-1 Railway Applications, Test for Fire Protection in Railway Vehicles

EN 45545 states:

  • fire protection measures for rolling stock;
  • Confirmation methods for these measures.
  • The protection of passengers and personnel is mainly based on measures to:
  • prevent fires caused by technical failures and equipment design or vehicle layout (Chapter 1, Chapter 4, Chapter 5 and Chapter 7);
  • Minimize the possibility of ignition of materials attached to railway vehicles due to accidents or vandalism (Chapter 1 and Chapter 2);
  • Detect a fire if it occurs (Chapter 6);
  • limiting the spread of fire by operational categories of materials (Chapter 2) and containment measures (Chapter 3);
  • Minimizing the effects of fire on passengers or personnel in terms of heat, smoke and toxic gases through the properties of materials fitted to railway vehicles (Chapter 2);
  • Controlling and managing a fire, for example, through fire detection, suppression and/or emergency power off (Chapter 6).
  • In the event of a fire on board, the ultimate goal is to enable passengers and personnel to evacuate the rail vehicle and reach safety.
  • The current European Standard describes the measures to be taken in the design of vehicles in the context of the infrastructure on which they work.
  • It is not within the scope of EN 45545 to describe measures that ensure the protection of vehicles in the event of a fire beyond what is necessary to fulfill the purpose of protecting passengers and personnel.
  • This European Standard applies to rolling stock as defined in Article 3.
  • Freight transport vehicles are not covered by EN 45545.

This part of EN 45545 covers:

  • Basic definitions;
  • Operation Categories;
  • Design Categories;
  • fire safety objectives;
  • General requirements and conformity assessment for fire protection measures.
