The purpose of this standard is to propose a classification method for wagon materials derived from the results of standardized tests. This classification method sets targets and also takes into account the combustion of materials as well as the opacity and toxicity of combustion emissions.

NF F16-102 sets classification targets and specifies the minimum classifications to be observed according to the type of materials involved.

Types of rolling stock are divided into 3 categories:

  • Category A1: All wagons that frequently pass through tunnels, including driver's cabins;
  • Category A2: Urban and suburban wagons, including driver's cabins, which infrequently pass through tunnels, wagons and their trailers, main sleeper wagons;
  • Category B: Mainline wagons with seats in tunnels, locomotive and locomotor cabs, including rarely traveling cabs.
