EN 54-23 Fire Detection and Fire Alarm System - Test for Visual Alarm Devices

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 54-23 testing. This standard specifies requirements, test methods, and performance criteria for visual alarm devices in a fixed installation intended to signal a fire detection and fire alarm system and a visual fire warning between building occupants.

EN 54-23 Fire Detection and Fire Alarm System - Test for Visual Alarm Devices

It is only intended to cover devices that obtain operating power through a physical electrical connection to an external source such as a fire alarm system.

This European Standard specifies the conformity assessment and marking of visual alarm devices. This European Standard applies to visual alarm devices with and without software dependent for operation. This European Standard applies only to pulsed or flashing visual alarm devices, for example xenon beacons or rotating beacons. Devices with continuous light output are excluded from this European Standard. This European Standard does not cover visual displays such as those on detectors or control and indicating equipment.

In the event that fires occurring in buildings are detected by fire alarm systems, the first warning is usually made with audible alarm devices (electronic sirens) or announcement systems. In addition, many buildings may require the use of visual alarm devices controlled by fire alarm systems. In this study, information about the design and implementation of visual alarm devices, i.e. luminous stimulants, in accordance with the relevant standards has been compiled.

Visual alarm devices may need to be used depending on the purpose of use of the buildings and some special situations related to the hearing sense of the people in the building. The main criterion for the use of visual alarm devices is the situations where the voice alarm devices are not reliable or suitable in the event of a fire.
