This standard is applicable to electrical equipment protected by enclosure and surface temperature limitation for use in explosive dust atmospheres. This standard supplements and replaces the general requirements of IEC 60079-0. When a requirement of this standard conflicts with a requirement of IEC 60079-0, the requirement of this standard takes precedence.
This standard does not apply to explosive powders or pyrophoric substances that do not require atmospheric oxygen for combustion. It does not apply to electrical equipment or Ex Components intended for use in underground parts of mines, as well as in parts of surface installations of such mines where there is a risk of fire or combustible dust.
This standard does not take into account any risk from the emission of flammable or toxic gas from dust. Additional protective measures must be taken into account when electrical equipment is applied in atmospheres that may contain flammable dust and explosive gas simultaneously or separately.
Additional measures may be necessary when electrical equipment must meet other environmental requirements, such as protection against water ingress and resistance to corrosion. The precautions used must not adversely affect the integrity of the enclosure.
