EN 16272-3-2 Railway Applications - Normalized Railway Noise Spectrum for Direct Field Applications

All noise-reducing devices other than noise barriers and related devices affecting airborne sound propagation, e.g. devices for reducing ground-borne vibration and on-board devices, are outside the scope of this European Standard.

Since the two main intrinsic acoustic properties of noise barriers and related devices that directly affect airborne sound propagation in the sound field, the sound reflection index and the sound insulation index, are frequency dependent, there is a need to define a reference for the railway noise spectrum. Moreover, the sound refractive index difference, which is the main intrinsic acoustic property of added devices, i.e. products that can be added on top of noise barriers and are intended to contribute to the attenuation of sound acting primarily on the refracted sound field, is frequency dependent.

This European Standard defines the essential characteristics of railway noise measured on the railway track side in terms of the characteristic normalized railway noise spectrum required to evaluate odd-numbered ratings of noise barriers and related devices acting on airborne sound propagation.
