This standard defines the functional and technical requirements for headlights, markers and tail lights for heavy rail units, excluding road, subway and self-contained systems. Portable lamps are outside the scope of this standard.

Additional taillights and beacons with special warning or signaling functions may be fitted only in agreement with the contractors, provided that they comply with the specified optical requirements and do not adversely affect the parameters given in this document.

The two lower beacons must be at the same height above the top surface of the rail. The distance between the centers of the two lower marker lamps shall not be less than 1000 mm and they shall be arranged symmetrically around the center line of the vehicle.

The upper beacon should be placed in the center and above the lower beacons. The vertical separation between the geometric centers of the upper beacon and the lower head and beacons must be greater than or equal to 600 mm.

Equipment used for tests must be calibrated. Calibration of test equipment shall conform to an applicable European, International or national standard. The date of the last calibration and a reference to the actual calibration certificate should be recorded.

The light intensity of the lamp under test should be measured using a photometer whose calibrated range is suitable for the tests performed. The distance at which measurements are made should be chosen so that the measurement is within the calibrated range of the photometer.
