EN 61496-3 Safety of Machinery, Electro-Sensitive Protective Equipment, Part 3: Standard Test for Active Opto-Electronic Protective Devices Responding to Radiated Reflection (AOPDDR)

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 61496-3 standard. This part of EN 61496 specifies additional requirements for the design, construction and testing of electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE) specifically designed to detect persons or parts of persons as part of a safety-related system using emission-sensitive active optoelectronic protective devices.

EN 61496-3 Safety of Machinery, Electro-Sensitive Protective Equipment, Part 3: Standard Test for Active Opto-Electronic Protective Devices Responding to Radiated Reflection (AOPDDR)

This standard does not specify the dimensions or configurations of the detection zone for any particular application and its arrangement with respect to hazardous parts, nor what constitutes the hazardous condition of any machine. It is limited to how ESPE works and how it interfaces with the machine. AOPDDRs are devices that have one or more detection zones specified in two dimensions (AOPDDR-2D) or one or more detection zones specified in three dimensions (AOPDDR-3D).

When the emitted radiation hits an object (for example, a person or part of a person), some of the emitted radiation is reflected to the receiving element(s) by diffuse reflection. This reflection is used to determine the position of the object. Opto-electronic devices that only perform one-dimensional point-like distance measurement, such as optical proximity switches, are not covered by this standard.

This standard does not address the aspects required for complex classification or differentiation of the detected object. This standard does not address requirements and tests for outdoor application. AOPDDRs using radiation with a wavelength peak outside the range of 820 nm to 950 nm and those using radiation other than that produced by the AOPDDR itself are excluded from this document.
