Incompressible flow equations are based on standard hydrodynamic equations for Newtonian incompressible fluids. It is not intended for use when encountering non-Newtonian fluids, fluid mixtures, slurries, or liquid-solid handling systems. Incompressible flow equations can be used with caution for multicomponent liquid mixtures that do not evaporate.

At very low pressure differential ratios to absolute inlet pressure (∆p/p1), compressible fluids behave similarly to incompressible fluids. Under these conditions, the sizing equations for compressible flow can be traced back to the standard hydrodynamic equations for Newtonian incompressible fluids. However, increasing ∆p/p1 values ​​result in compressibility effects that require modification of the basic equations with appropriate correction factors. The equations for compressible fluids are for use with ideal gas or steam and are not designed for use with multiphase flows such as gas-liquid, vapor-liquid, or gas-solid mixtures.

In many industrial applications, reducers or other fittings are attached to control valves. The influence of such fixtures on the rated flow coefficient of the control valve can be significant. A correction factor is introduced to account for this effect. Additional factors are introduced to take into account fluid property characteristics that affect the flow capacity of a control valve.
