DIN 51528 Standard Test for Determination of Thermal Stability of Unused Heat Transfer Fluids

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of DIN 51528 standard. The test method according to this standard is used to determine the thermal stability of the unused heat transfer medium Q (hereinafter referred to as the heat transfer medium) according to DIN 51522.

DIN 51528 Standard Test for Determination of Thermal Stability of Unused Heat Transfer Fluids

The method is applicable to heat carriers used to transfer heat even at temperatures above their boiling point at atmospheric pressure.

At laboratory scale and under the conditions specified in this standard, the method records the material change in the heat transfer medium as a result of heat input depending on temperature and exposure time. The results provide information on the resistance of various heat carriers with different structures to thermal stress at the specified test temperature and test duration for the respective application.

The applicability of the standard to the organosilicon liquid heat transfer medium has not been tested. Results are highly dependent on test conditions. Comparison of test results from different laboratories is not allowed. In a technical heat transfer system it is not possible to transfer the results to the behavior of the heat transfer medium because the heat transfer medium in the system is exposed to a large number of additional influence variables.

Interactions with the materials of the system, pollution, heat build-up when flow conditions are hindered, temperature distribution in the heat transfer medium circuit and other factors can cause changes in the heat transfer medium. However, the procedure according to this standard generally provides information on the behavior of a heat transfer medium and can be used as an additional aid in deciding the optimal use of the product.

The heat transfer medium to be tested is weighed at room temperature into a clean, dry glass ampoule or a cleaned, dry, metallic test cup. The heat carrier should fill about half of the room volume. The air is completely expelled from the gas space of the glass bulb or metal test beaker by adding nitrogen.

If necessary, the glass bulb is carefully closed and placed in the protective tube while the heat carrier is cooled. During this preparation, the heat transfer medium must be protected from premature, excessive heat exposure. The protective tube is closed with its screw cap and placed in a suitable holder in the heating cabinet.
