An outward-expanding circular iron spring fits into a piston groove, sealing against the gas or liquid pressure difference between the circumferential and side faces of the ring and the bore and piston groove. The keystone ring is used where ring sticking can be expected. Due to its wedge shape, any radial movement of the ring will change its axial clearance, thus minimizing combustion residue build-up.
