EN 15153-2 Railway Applications - External Visual and Auditory Warning Devices - Part 2: Test Horns for Heavy Rails

In the case of heavy rail vehicle formations maneuvering, the requirements of this document do not apply to the vehicle(s) being pushed.

To this end, the following requirements are included:

  • Functional and technical requirements of the horn as a component;
  • Functional and technical requirements for the integration of horns into the vehicle;
  • Experimental requirements.

Trains will be equipped with one or more warning horns on the vehicle ahead. Warning horns must be installed on all vehicle fronts. In the case of maneuvering locomotives only, the requirements of this standard can be met with a single versatile warning horn. Consideration should be given to the position of the warning horns, taking into account the possible exposure of personnel to excessive noise.

Noise exposure limitation of persons in the driver's cabin is handled by complying with the driver's cabin noise exposure limit values given in TSI Noise. To minimize the environmental impact, the warning horns should be directed along the longitudinal axis of the vehicle.

The horns will be operated using an energy source readily available in the vehicle carrying the horn. The horn must meet the technical requirements of this document over the entire range of energy levels encountered in the vehicle in normal operation. Upon agreement between contractors, the horn will be operational over a wide range of energy levels.

Warning horns and their control systems must be protected against impact and subsequent blocking by airborne objects such as debris, dust, snow, hail and birds. Where such shielding features are used, acoustic requirements will apply when any shielding feature is present.
