This standard applies to piston rings of reciprocating internal combustion engines up to and including 200 mm in diameter. It can also be applied to the rings of compressors operating under similar conditions.
There are many such materials made by different manufacturers using different casting and machining techniques, each suitable for a particular application. In most cases, their chemical composition is different, but the method of manufacture and, if applicable, heat treatment result in materials from different manufacturers with similar mechanical properties. The performance of rings made from two different materials can be very close to each other; that is, several material subclasses can satisfy a particular requirement.
In ring production, it is convenient to classify materials according to their modules, because for a ring of certain sizes, the pressure exerted on the cylinder wall is determined by the module alone. Material strength is also generally related to modulus, that is, the higher the modulus, the higher the strength, although there are exceptions depending on the manufacturing method. Material hardness is determined by both chemical composition and heat treatment; this is clarified by dividing classes into subclasses. Therefore, the final material and subgrade selection will be agreed between the manufacturer and the customer.
