Titanium 6AL4V is the most widely used titanium grade. It offers corrosion resistance, light weight and high strength and is typically used in the aerospace industry. This alloy can be aged by heat treatment, which further increases its strength.
Applications of the 6AL4V include rings, compressor blades and discs for jet engines, pressure vessels, helicopter rotor hubs and critical forgings that require a high strength-to-weight ratio. 6AL4V also plays a role in medical, marine and chemical processing environments.
This specification covers a titanium alloy in the form of bars, wire, forgings, flash welded rings, shapes drawn up to 6.000 inches (152.40 mm) including the minimum distance between diameter or parallelograms, and stock in any size forged or flash welded.
These products are typically used for parts requiring moderate strength with a maximum service temperature in the range of 750 to 900°F (399 to 510°C) depending on the temperature at which the product will be used in the annealed condition, but the use is not limited to such applications.
It is then hot worked, annealed and descaled, with or without cold reduction. Unless prohibited by the purchaser, the bars may be solution heat treated prior to annealing. A treated or grounded surface is permitted unless prohibited by the buyer.
The alloy will be polymelted. The product will be machined to final thickness/diameter by metallurgical work processes prior to any straightening, sizing or surface finishing.
