This standard describes the determination of bearing strength and bearing yield strength of metallic materials by a pin-type bearing test. The bearing load is usually applied to the specimen via a tight-fitting cylindrical pin, which is harder and stronger than the test specimen.
Bearing strength is defined as the maximum bearing stress a material can withstand. The bearing yield strength is the bearing stress at which a material exhibits a certain limiting deviation from the proportionality of the bearing stress to its horizontal strain. Bearing properties are useful in comparing the design of materials and structures under conditions.

Data from the bearing test are the bearing and ultimate yield strength. The data provide a measure of the load-bearing capacity of the material edge loaded with a tight-fitting cylindrical pin through a hole located at a specified distance from the specimen edge.

This test method covers pin type bearing testing of metallic materials to determine bearing yield strength and bearing strength. The presence of residual oils on the bearing surfaces can significantly reduce the bearing yield strength value obtained by this method.
