ASTM E1077 Standard Test Methods for Estimating the Decarburization Depth of Steel Samples

Developed by the American Test and Materials Association (ASTM), the ASTM E1077 standard describes test methods for estimating the depth of decarburisation of steels regardless of composition, matrix microstructure or section shape. The main test methods in this regard are: screening methods, microscopic methods, micro drop hardness methods and chemical analysis methods. The full name of the standard is as follows: ASTM E1077 Standard test methods for estimating the decarburization depth of steel samples.

ASTM E1077 Standard Test Methods for Estimating the Decarburization Depth of Steel Samples

In order to meet this standard, the following standard has been published by the Turkish Standards Institute in our country: TS EN ISO 3887 Steels - Determination of decarburization depth.

The methods in the said standard can be used in any cross section. Chemical analytical methods generally show a greater decarburization depth than microscopic methods. However, it is limited by the availability of some simple shapes and equipment. These methods are generally designed for research studies. Microdentation hardness method is considered suitable for accurate measurements of hardened structures with relatively homogeneous microstructures.

These test methods are used to detect surface losses in carbon content due to heating at high temperatures, such as hot work or heat treatment. Screening tests are simple, fast and low cost tests designed to separate non-decarburized samples from samples with significant decarburization. Microscopic testing requires a metallographically polished section to ensure the depth and nature of current decarburization is accurately determined. Micro drop hardness methods are used in polished cross sections and for hardened samples with reasonably homogeneous microstructures utired. Chemical analytical methods are limited to samples with simple and smooth shapes.

In general, microscopic tests are sufficient to determine the suitability of the material for use, specification acceptance, production control, research and development.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of metallic testing services are ASTM E1077 standard tests.
