Standard Test Method for Analysis of ASTM E1086 Austenitic Stainless Steel by Spark Atomic Emission Spectrometry

Developed by the American Testing and Materials Authority (ASTM), the ASTM E1086 standard provides a test procedure for accurately determining the chemical composition, desired metallurgical properties of stainless steels. This procedure is suitable for production control and inspection tests. The full name of the standard is as follows: ASTM E1086 Standard test method for analysis of austenitic stainless steel by spark atomic emission spectrometer.

Standard Test Method for Analysis of ASTM E1086 Austenitic Stainless Steel by Spark Atomic Emission Spectrometry

This test method involves the analysis of austenitic stainless steel with spark emission vacuum spectrometry for the following elements in the standard ranges: chrome, nickel, molybdenum, manganese, silicon, copper, carbon, phosphorus and sulfur. In the table, the composition range for each element is given as a percentage.

This test method is designed for routine analysis of cold cast discs or for examination and testing of stainless steel samples with a flat surface or a minimum diameter of 13 millimeters. Samples should be large enough to prevent overheating during discharge and have a similar metallurgical condition and composition with reference materials.

One or more reference materials should be close to the composition of the sample. The method of analyzing reference materials and making specified mathematical corrections is also used to correct interference effects and compensate for errors caused by device deviation. Various such systems is widely used.

Spark (spark or arc) atomic emission spectrometry is used for the analysis of metallic elements in solid samples. This test method is a destructive method. In conventional methods, a solid sample is generally ground during analysis. The sample is ground with graphite powder to make non-conductive materials conductive. During the test, an electric arc is passed through the sample and raised to a high temperature to stimulate atoms in the sample.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of metallic testing services are ASTM E1086 standard tests.
