Standard Test Methods for Determining ASTM E112 Average Grain Size

Developed by the American Test and Materials Association (ASTM), the ASTM E112 standard covers the measurement and comparison procedure of the average grain size, the planimetric procedure (or Jeffries procedure), and the intercept procedures. The full name of the standard is as follows: ASTM E112 Standard test methods for determining average grain size.

Standard Test Methods for Determining ASTM E112 Average Grain Size

The test methods described in this standard are applicable to non-metallic materials with similar structures to the metallic structures shown in the comparison charts. These test methods are applied to single-phase or multi-phase grain structures. These test methods are used to determine the average grain size of samples with a uniform distribution of grain areas, diameters or intersection lengths.

The test methods here concern only the determination of the planar grain size, that is, the characterization of the two-dimensional grain cross sections revealed by the section plane. It does not include the determination of the spatial grain size, ie the measurement of the size of the three-dimensional grains in the sample volume.

In order to meet this standard, the following standard has been published by the Turkish Standards Institute in our country: TS EN ISO 643 Steels - Micrographic determination of visible grain size. This standardincludes determination of apparent grain sizes in steels by micrographic method. This standard describes the methods of making the grains visible and calculating the average grain size in samples with the same size distribution.

Metals are generally crystalline in nature and have internal boundaries known as grain boundaries apart from single crystals. The atoms in each grain are arranged in a certain order depending on the crystal structure of the metal or alloy.

Metallography is a science that studies the internal structure of metals, and experts in this field examine the polished sections of samples to determine the grain size.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of metallic testing services are ASTM E112 standard tests.
